Can I Get an Online Notary in California?
California notaries are not currently authorized to perform Remote Online Notarization, but California residents may still have an online option through an authorized out-of-state electronic notary.
Need an online notary in California? Although California notaries are not currently authorized to perform Remote Online Notarization (RON), California residents may be able to have eligible documents notarized online by a properly commissioned remote notary in another state.

Can I use a remote online notary in California?
Potentially, yes. California notaries currently require physical appearance, but that does not necessarily prevent a California resident from using an authorized remote online notary commissioned in another state.
Virginia allows commissioned electronic notaries to perform qualifying remote notarizations using secure audio-video technology. Whether RON is appropriate depends on the document and the requirements of the organization receiving it.
How does online notarization work?
Remote Online Notarization allows a signer to meet with a notary through a secure online platform. The process typically includes identity verification, live audio-video communication, electronic signing when applicable, and electronic notarization.
Clients generally need:
- Acceptable government-issued identification
- Their document, complete except for signatures
- Reliable internet access
- A compatible device with a camera and microphone
What documents can be notarized online?
Depending on the document and the receiving party, RON may be available for affidavits, acknowledgments, business documents, authorization forms, certain powers of attorney, and other eligible documents requiring notarization.
