How to Prepare for an Online Notarization in Virginia

Online notarization can save you a trip, but a little preparation makes the appointment much smoother. In Virginia, remote online notarization is an electronic notarization where the signer and notary are in different physical locations. You meet with the notary through live audio and video, and your identity must be verified before the notarization can proceed.

1. Confirm the document can be handled online

Start with the person or organization that will receive your document. Ask whether it accepts an electronically signed and remotely notarized version, and whether it requires a particular format or signing process. This is especially helpful for loan, real estate, estate planning, and documents intended for use in another jurisdiction.

If you are closing on a loan, follow your lender’s or title company’s instructions before scheduling a notary independently. 2. Have your identification ready

Have a current, acceptable government-issued photo ID available and make sure its details can be read clearly. Online notarization platforms may require you to photograph your ID and complete additional identity checks. Give yourself a few extra minutes before the appointment to complete those steps.

3. Check your device and internet connection

Choose a quiet, well-lit place with a reliable internet connection. Charge your device, allow camera and microphone access, and open your appointment link a little early. The notary needs to see, hear, and communicate with you during the live session.

4. Review the document and identify everyone who must sign

Check names, dates, blank spaces, and any instructions from the person who prepared the document. Let the notary know ahead of time if multiple people need to sign or if witnesses are required. 5. Ask about the price and completed document
