Mobile Notary vs Bank Notary: Which Should You Choose?

The honest side-by-side between a mobile notary and the free notary at your bank branch, and why 'free' isn't always free.

'The bank does it for free.' It's one of the first things people say when they hear about mobile notary services. And it's true, most banks offer free notarization to account holders. So why does anyone pay for a mobile notary?

Because 'free' isn't the whole picture.

Cost

Bank notary: usually free for account holders, $10–25 for non-account-holders. Mobile notary: Virginia's per-signature notarial fee plus a travel fee.

On pure dollars, the bank wins.

Availability

Bank notary: only when the branch is open, only when the branch's designated notary is on the clock (often one person, often not available on the day you need). Mobile notary: same day, evenings, weekends, and after-hours 24/7 by appointment.

On availability, mobile wins by a mile, and it's the biggest reason people give up on the bank.

Location

Bank notary: at the bank. Mobile notary: at your home, office, hospital, jobsite, restaurant, or wherever you'd rather be.

For anyone who can't easily leave the house, parents with sick kids, adult children caring for elderly parents, executives with back-to-back meetings, mobile is the obvious choice.

Expertise

Bank notary: a bank employee who received notary training on the side. Fine for a single acknowledgment. Often uncomfortable with jurats, loan packages, or anything unusual. Mobile notary: a full-time professional who has probably notarized the exact type of document you're bringing hundreds of times.

For complex documents, loan closings, estate packages, apostille prep, foreign-going documents, the difference in expertise is enormous.

Willingness to notarize

Bank notaries frequently decline notarial acts they aren't comfortable with, including many completely valid ones. If you've ever been told 'we can't notarize that here,' you know the frustration. Mobile notaries handle the full range of notarial work every day.

Time

Bank notary: 30–60 minutes of your day, including drive, parking, waiting, and hoping. Mobile notary: the notary arrives when scheduled and leaves fifteen minutes later.

Multiply your hourly rate by the time saved and 'free' starts looking expensive.

The right answer

If you're an account holder, you have one simple document, plenty of time, and no complications, the bank notary is a perfectly reasonable option. For anything else, complex documents, tight timelines, mobility constraints, or a workday you can't afford to interrupt, a mobile notary is almost always the better choice.
